🛠Addpex Bumper – FPV Upgrade for the Most Popular Frame
After over 3 years of development and more than 25 different versions, it’s finally here: my Apex Bumper – a modular, crash-friendly front protection for the legendary ImpulseRC Apex Frame, built by the community, for the community.
📖 The Idea
I wanted to create something that’s not exclusive or overpriced – but available to everyone, easy to print, and actually useful. Not 100+ € for a piece of plastic – just something you can build yourself.
3+ years of work, countless test flights and crashes
25+ iterations and refinements
Compatible with all popular FPV cams, including DJI O3/O4
Designed for the ImpulseRC Apex – one of the most beloved frames in FPV
BandoProof – designed to protect where it matters
100% free to download – because open sharing makes FPV better
🔬 Development Journey
The idea started when I tried to mount a DJI O3 Air Unit inside the Apex – and quickly realized: it just doesn’t fit. The O3 is too wide for the original internal space. The only clean solution: remove the front standoffs. And that’s where things got tricky.
Once the standoffs are gone, you need a new structural connection – and mounting the top plate becomes a problem. My solution: shorten the top plate, making space for the O3/O4 while also allowing a completely new way to reinforce the front with a printed part.
I experimented endlessly with mounting strategies, crash behavior, flex, heat, vibration, weight and more. From TPU 95A to carbon-nylon blends and even injection molding, I tried everything.
In the end, I knew one thing: this had to be DIY-friendly. Anyone should be able to print it.
🧪 Material & Filament Testing
❌ Filaments that failed:
TPU 95A – too soft/stretchy → heat inserts rip out easily
PA6 / PA12 / CF / GF – brittle and crack under impact
PLA, PETG, ABS – too rigid, poor shock absorption, prone to breaking
✅ Filaments that worked:
Soft PLA – the best performer: rubber-like behavior, great flexibility, survives crashes
TPU 64D – also works great: firmer than TPU95A, holds shape, strong crash resistance
🖨️ Print Recommendations
For Soft PLA & TPU 64D:
Infill: 75–100 %
Perimeters: at least 6
Wall thickness: 1.6–2.4 mm
Layer height: 0.2 mm
Bed temp: 50–60 °C
Nozzle: 0.4 mm or bigger
Supports: Tree
Speed: 20–40 mm/s
🤝 Community First
This isn’t a commercial project – it’s something I built because it actually helped me and I know it can help others too. If you want to remix, modify, or ask something – reach out. Contributions welcome!
👉 If you print and use it, feel free to share pics or videos – I’d love to see what you create.
Fly safe – crash smart. ✌️
