Description

Since I frequently change tools on my SDBs, I wanted a Quick Release for the powder measures, so I thought I'd try my hand at making my own. It works well with either version of the fail safe (I have both types.) It also requires you to replace the mounting screw with a 10-32 3/4" Cap head screw. For the knob/slider insert assembly, I used a 3mm x 20mm machine screw which self taps into the slider insert and a 7/32" x 11/16" (or comparable) compression spring between the slider and body.
To install:

  • Insert the spring then slider into the body.
  • While holding the slider down, start the screw into the slider enough to hold it.
  • Attach the QR to the press and secure with the 10-32 cap head screw.
  • Insert the powder measure, making sure it's seated properly and the slider has engaged (the powder measure should not lift up.)
  • Tighten the knob screw until the knob just touches the body without much wobble.
  • Double check that the QR functions properly and the powder measure releases from the press or stays locked when installed.
  • Re-attach the fail safe rod and you are ready to go.

NOTE: It is ALWAYS a good practice to double check your powder measure is fully secured before reloading (whether using a QR or not.) Otherwise, the first time you try to charge a case your measure could pop out and spill powder all over your bench. Ask me how I know....
