Description
A muddy slip bent one of my commercial poles, so I built a lightweight, low-cost replacement using reclaimed bamboo plus two quick 3D prints: a tip that holds a small steel bit for grip, and a top cap with a pass-through for the wrist strap. After a morning test walk, they work surprisingly well.
Design goals
Resilient, light, cheap (mostly scrap + a few grams of filament)
Fast to make: hand tools + 3D print
Repair-friendly: parts are glue-on and replaceable
What’s included
Tip_Bamboo_NW.STL – press/sleeve tip with socket for steel insert
TopCap_Bamboo_NW.STL – closed cap with strap hole (zip-tie friendly)
(Optional) STEP files for edits/remix if you want to tweak tolerances
Sizing
Pole length rule (NW standard): your height (cm) × 0.68 → round to nearest 5 cm.
Example: 175 cm → ~119 cm → cut bamboo to 120 cm.
Bamboo outer Ø: works best around 20–24 mm.
If your bamboo varies, scale the tip and cap uniformly by +2–3% or lightly sand the cane end.
Materials & Tools
2 straight bamboo canes (no cracks; even wall thickness)
2 steel driver bits (Phillips/Torx “star” bits from an old screwdriver set)
Epoxy (recommended) or gel CA glue
2 zip-ties (to anchor wrist straps)
Wrist straps salvaged from your old poles
Grip wrap: scrap PVC/TPU fabric, cloth tape, or inner-tube
(Optional) Heat-shrink tubing (large) for a clean handle finish
Hand saw, sandpaper, drill (3–4 mm for strap hole)
Print Settings
Material: PETG (best outdoors), or Nylon/PA; PLA works but seal/coat it
Layer height: 0.20 mm
Walls: 4 perimeters
Infill: 40–60% (grid/gyroid)
Supports: No (models are oriented to avoid them)
Bed adhesion: Skirt/brim if your Nylon curls
Orientation: Print tips upright so layer lines run across the force path; caps upright
Safety & Limitations (Read First)
DIY gear, not certified sporting equipment. Inspect before each use (cracks, loose tip/bit).
Avoid icy/rocky slopes. Stop if you see fiber splits or feel wobble.
Use appropriate technique/length; when in doubt, ask a qualified NW instructor.
