Description

This tab is designed for the automatic release of low-profile models, as shown in the cover animation. Beside the tab itself, which is a standard Thingiverse Customizer compatible OpenSCAD file, I present a full automated solution, foundation for turning your 3D printer into a workhorse.

Several general-purpose solutions exist, such as tilting the printer, mounting scrapers on the printhead, actuated bed corner benders, or magnetic bed swap systems. However, these methods are often either expensive or unreliable. For instance, a magnetic bed swap system for a daily output of 18 prints would require 18 magnetic beds per each printer. Solutions like scrapers have led to issues - I experienced the printhead stalling into a sickly grind. Corner bending failed to detach my low-profile prints.

My solution needs none of that. It uses existing printer components and a basket to catch the ejected prints. Every morning, I collect finished prints, clean the nozzle from accumulated filament gunk, restart the 24-hour print file, and spend 5 to 10 minutes cutting off the sacrificial tabs using office scissors.

No printer modification or tilting is required. The process uses the printhead shroud itself for bumping and pushing the tabs, then shoving released print off the bed. A piece of paper is used to control print slide into the basket and preventing part stuck under the bed. A more permanent slider could certainly be designed, but why, if this 10 second hack with paper sheet works so well ?

Use Customizer to create release tab suited for your model or use my posted BedReleaseTab-18x12x14. This tab provides 2x mechanical advantage, lifting 8mm print approx 10mm off bed during the push. It uses only 0.4g of filament. 4 corner tabs add just 9% material to my 1h15m print.

You can turn a low-end printer into a 24/7 factory with just a G-code file. Or 50 printers, the presented solution scales for free by copying the file.

⚠️ Print ejection requires G-code modifications, which is outside the scope of this post. If you need help implementing this automation, contact me.
