Thanks sch00f for the original model. This is the version I printed. I did the following:
Then I printed FDM with the following machine/settings:
The 60% scale fits my 8" chessboard, but it is very tight, see the pictures. It is more comfortable to play on a 12" board, though you could probably go up to 75% scale there. Full scale would need a 16" or larger board. These have some very thin parts so if you are printing FDM I would suggest going larger if you can.
For post processing, I just clipped off supports and any drooping edges with flush cutters, then cleaned up strings/white spots with very short, careful blasts from a small butane torch lighter. In PLA you probably wouldn't need this, but I like PETG for the durability. I had some PLA ones snap on the layers in the thin sections. Support removal from PETG was a bit tricky.
