Description

This is a remix of this enclosure (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:5467676), designed for the inexpensive, Chinese-made ADuM3160 USB 1.5kV isolator modules commonly found on sites like AliExpress. This enclosure is also compatible with the ADuM4160 module.

I started with the original design because I wanted something compact (using a through-hole enclosure for the BS0505S DC-DC converter), but several details needed refinement to achieve a perfect result, and I ended up reworking almost everything. After these improvements, I believe it’s now the best ADuM3160 enclosure available online!

Improvements:

  • Adjusted Dimensions: Enlarged the enclosure by 2mm externally and 1mm internally. The original was too tight for my module to fit. Given the loose tolerances of mass-produced, low-cost electronics, this design provides the necessary extra clearance.
  • Increased Durability: All wall thicknesses have been increased to 1.5mm (up from 1.0mm) for a sturdier feel.
  • Enhanced Ergonomics: Added side grips for easier handling (push-pull) and external chamfers to eliminate sharp edges.
  • Structural Reinforcement: Added internal chamfers to strengthen the corners and reduce stress points.
  • Secure Closure: Implemented a lip-and-groove latch system to hold the lid firmly in place (test it without the module first to feel the snap!).
  • Engraved Labels: Added clear markings for ADuM3160, In (USB male/Computer/Power), Out (USB female/Device), and F (Full) & L (Lo) USB Speed for the switch. Feel free to add a drop of paint to highlight the text if necessary.
  • Light Pipes: Added three holes with light wells for the LEDs. To guide the light to the surface, simply cut three 5mm segments of translucent PETG filament with an X-Acto knife and insert them into the holes. If you don't have translucent PETG, then leave the holes open.
  • Precision Alignment: Relocated the female USB connector cutout by 0.7mm and the power supply cutout by 0.5mm for a perfect fit.
  • Non-Slip Base: Added four recesses on the bottom for optional 8×2mm silicone feet.

Filament usage: ~7g.

Fit & Finish: The module fits perfectly. It looks professional, feels rugged, and is overall very satisfying to use.
