Tiered Storage Box Upgrade

Not long ago, I redesigned the upper tray to turn it into a fully closable section. In the first version, it was more of a tray for quick part picking, but in practice this solution wasn’t very convenient: the lid didn’t secure well and regularly caused small but annoying issues.

The solution turned out to be simpler than expected. I split the lid into four closing sections and implemented it as sliding lids with latches.

The changes go beyond just the lid. I also refined the lock design — an additional slot was added, making the section connection noticeably tighter and more reliable.

I’ll also address a common question about tolerances for the rods that hold the locks. I intentionally do not include them. Even minimal play negatively affects the latch performance. That’s why it’s important to use rods with an exact diameter — as before, bicycle spokes remain the best option: cheap, accessible, and precise.

In the attached video, I once again show the assembly process. Many people are encountering this storage system for the first time, and assembly questions come up regularly — so it’s проще to watch once than explain it in words.

Important: this update only modifies the upper tray. All other sections remain unchanged — you can use them from the previous release. There are about 50 divider and height variations available in STEP format (not 3MF), so you can easily adapt them to your needs if required.

As for the lids, I also added a grid-style version as an experiment. I don’t use it myself, but it was interesting to test the idea. If you want, you can create your own variations using slicer infill settings — the 3MF file contains everything needed to understand how it was done .

It is recommended to apply dichloromethane to the clips to strengthen their bonding with the layers. These parts are very small and can easily break, so chemical treatment makes them more durable and reliable. This approach minimizes the risk of damage during assembly or use.

Personally, I use closed lids. But the choice is yours.

I hope this update makes the storage system more convenient for everyday use compared to the previous version.
