Description
A french cleat mount specifically for a canvas with a wood stretcher frame. Designed with significant freedom for lateral and rotational movement, but also very secure flush mounting against the wall.
Mount the frame piece flush (or nearly so) in the top with small screws. This doesn't bear any weight, the screws can be pretty small; I think I used #6 wood screws.
Measure the height, mount to drywall with one screw-in anchor in the center of the wall piece. "Bore-fast" anchors work great for me, but anything should work. Hang the frame (just drop it over the wall-mounted cleat), swing to get the level right, remove it. Add a second or even third anchor if desired, not too tight yet. Re-check level (mount the frame, adjust, remove). Tighten when it's set, adjust left/right if needed. That's it.
The cleat will naturally hold the canvas against the wall, flush at top and bottom. Drywall screw-in anchors hold 25-50# per screw, you can get way more support than needed with 1, 2, or 3 screws. The outer two have room to swing A LOT before tightening, reducing the need to get level or lateral placement "just right" before setting the canvas.
Print without supports with the screwholes down "into" the bed, in the easy-to-print orientation. I make mine with PCTG, but if it's indoors any material will be fine. Color also doesn't matter, these are entirely hidden behind the art.
