Description

Hello, Teachers!

This is a lesson plan for a project in a beginner 3D modeling class. I have rolled out this project twice in my 3D modeling class and have gotten great results each time. Please use in your classroom, adjust as you see fit, remix, and reshare! I'd love to get your feedback and hear about the tweaks you made to make it work for your students.

##Lesson
Learning Objectives: By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:

  • Create a printable design using solid modeling software.
  • Create a design from instructions.
  • Develop greater proficiency with the following tools and techniques in Tinkercad: alignment, the workplane, rotation, the ruler, and subtraction

Modeling Software: Tinkercad

Level: Beginner - Intermediate

Requisite Skills & Understandings: A Tinkercad account for each student.
The ability to navigate (orbit, pan, zoom), place and resize primitives, use the workplane and ruler, make a hole, group, and subtract one primitive from another.

Pedagogical Suggestions: paired modeling

Common Core Standards: to be updated

Pedagogical Resources: (please copy and adapt at will)

  • Presentation: Prezi with lesson structure and Do Now ideas
  • Handout: Student worksheet with step-by-step instructions
  • Videos: Part 1 & Part 2

Options for differentiation based on skill level:

  • High: Students complete with only an image, dimensions, structural requirements (a spec sheet with orthographic measurements)
  • Middle: Students use the step-by-step written instructions.
  • Low: Students use both the written and video instructions.

Lesson adapted from Blake Maloff's lesson in Chapter 4 of The Essential Guide to 3D Printers, published by Maker Media, Inc.
