Customisable Filament Spool Holder for Deltaprintr

When my Deltaprintr kit arrived from Kickstarter, it came with a laser-cut wood spool holder that was too large for the roll of filament I had bought.

Having no alternative, I set the filament spool on the table and allowed it to unwind from the sides. While this seemed like a good solution at first, over time the filament would tangle itself into a nightmare of kinked filament that would make Medusa proud and giggly! Longer prints became a restless marathon of gyrating and turning the spool in an attempt to keep one step ahead of the developing kinkiness.

Eventually realizing this was not practical, I seized the opportunity to learn OpenSCAD and design my way out of the problem. The first practical project out of my 3D printer became these custom filament spool holder that preserved the aesthetics of the original wood-cut spool holders, but that I could tailor to whatever size of filament spool I had on hand.

My initial frustration turned into a success and a great learning experience for someone just starting off with 3D printing. To this day, I continue to use my custom 3D printed spool holders!
