Description
The Atlas missile system was developed over several years, starting in the late 1950s.
As an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), it went through three main versions, the D, E and F models.
The F system, shown here, the last Atlas model, consisted of a reinforced silo where the missile was stored vertically, then lifted to the surface on a platform and launched. It was the first vertical underground launch system, and the prototype for all systems in use today. 72 silos of this type were built between 1960 and 1962 and remained operational until 1965, when they were decommissioned.
I would like to thank Scott VOSS and Bruce Townsley of the Atlas Missile Museum of Texas for providing me with all the plans that enabled me to model this launcher.
This silo-based Atlas F was assigned to the 578th Strategic Missile Squadron based at Dyess Air Force Base. It was the Atlas 64F, serial number 61-2550 "Spirit of Oplin" (numbered 550 on the missile).

Later, in February 1978, this same launcher was used to launch the very first GPS demonstrator, NAVSTAR 1.
