Description
In 1904-1905, during the Russo Japanese War, Japanese ships repeatedly broke into the Russian naval base at Lushunkou, launched multiple torpedo and artillery attacks on Russian ships, laid mines, and used sunken ships to block the port and restrict the movements of the Russian fleet. At first, the Russian fleet patrolled and the task of guarding the harbor was undertaken by destroyers, but the number of destroyers in the base was already small, and they were also responsible for conducting torpedo attacks. The modified civilian ships had poor tactical and technical performance. Therefore, after the Russo Japanese War, Russia built the world's first batch of dedicated escort ships. The initial escort ships had a small displacement (400-600 tons), weak firepower, poor resistance to wind and waves, and low speed, making them only suitable for activities near the sea. During this period, although escort ships were already naval combat vessels, they were still more similar to maritime patrol ships.
