Description
Another idea no one asked for, but I just couldn’t leave un-designed. I had seen a pair of knives that sheathed into each other’s grips, but this limits the blade length to less than the grip length. I realized this could be remedied if one had sliding blades which locked in position. I couldn’t make them from metal but I could make sliding carriages holding box cutter blades, so I did. A spring-loaded locking link holds the blades out, and is disengaged by the opposite blade when one puts the pair back together. It’s probably not strong enough to do substantial cutting and certainly not strong enough for combat but it demonstrated the concept. Each ‘blade’ is 9” long, despite an overall stowed length of 9.625”. It is also supportless.
This design is somewhat vitamin-intensive, requiring 109g of filament, sixteen 4mm M3 bolts, ten 8mm M3 bolts, ten two M3 hex nuts, eight trapezoid 2 7/16” (62mm) box cutter blades, twelve 5mm x 2mm disc magnets, and two small springs (approx. 0.75” L x 0.25” OD). I sourced mine from some Pilot G2 pens.
Also, be aware that from a legal perspective, these probably qualify as fixed-blade knives. Thankfully, where I live that’s not a concern, but it might be for some of y’all. And like I said, it's for light use only.
