Heads up

I have added an additional print profile for stronger and more durable bit heads, at the cost of increased material usage. Recommended if planning to print with PLA. Otherwise you should be good to go with the standard.

About

  • While there are similar 45-degree drilling guides available on the platform, I aimed to redesign this tool from scratch to achieve a cleaner and more efficient solution. Many existing models face common issues, such as inadequate surface contact on the drilling area, which can result in the guide shifting exactly when you need stability the most—during drilling. I believe this design achieves superior alignment and minimizes unwanted movement for consistent and precise results.

  • Additionally, since we know that 3D-printed plastics, despite their utility, can wear out or degrade over time from repeated use, I opted for a more sustainable and modular solution. Instead of integrating fixed holes directly into the body of the guide, I incorporated threaded inserts (M14x1.5), allowing users to print replaceable drill bit inserts with various internal diameters. If wear occurs, you only need to reprint the insert, not the entire frame.

  • To optimize the design further, I focused on reducing material usage without compromising strength. The total material weight is just 28 grams, which I believe is well within acceptable limits for a tool like this. The printing time, including bed leveling, is also highly efficient, taking only 51 minutes (printing the drill bit guide set alongside the main frame will require additional time).

Purpose

This guide offers a practical, customizable, and resource-efficient solution for achieving precise 45-degree drill holes on wooden planks or other platform edges. I’m confident it will be a valuable addition to any DIY enthusiast’s toolkit.

Extra Guide Bits

This kit features guide bits ranging in size from 3mm to 10mm, making them suitable for most general applications. For higher precision and better durability, a steel guide will also perfectly work in the thread (M14x1.5).
