Description

This is a model of the “Copper Bones” Pirate key from the movie “The Goonies”

When I was looking for a 3d model of this iconic movie prop so that I could make a metal casting, I was shocked to find no models that were suitably detailed. So, I decided to make one myself.

Using reference images from the movie and leaning heavily on a snapshot of a 1980s magazine that featured the prop, I digitally sculpted what you see here. I tried to duplicate every detail as closely as possible, as this was to become a gift for a family member, but movies commonly use multiple versions of the same prop, so this may look different than what is in the movie based on the scene.

The final result was used to cast a rather heavy metal version, which I have included a picture of for reference.

I printed this one in gold/silver silk PLA, but I would recommend regular PLA followed by some gold paint and ink washes to get the desired weathered look.

The model is orientated at such an angle to get the most detail possible when printing, but you can certainly place the model flat if you are using an A1 bed-slinger (to help with adhesion). It will still look good.
