Mühle, also known as Nine Men's Morris, is a classic strategy game that has been played for centuries across various cultures. This 3D-printable travel version allows you to take the game with you wherever you go, making it a perfect companion for game enthusiasts. With multiple variations available, including Nine Men's Morris, Seven Men's Morris, Five Men's Morris, Three Men's Morris, Rundmühle, and Morabaraba (Twelve Men's Morris), this set offers endless strategic challenges. (Main source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nine_men%27s_morris)The rules are as followed:

Game Components

  • Board: A flat, grid-based playing surface with intersections where pieces can be placed and moved.
  • Pieces (Men): Small tokens for each player, distinguishable by color.
  • Storage Box (Optional): A compact container to store pieces for easy travel and put the board on top for more stability.

General Gameplay Overview

Each variant of the game follows a similar turn-based system where players attempt to create "mills" (three pieces in a row [Picture on the Left]) to remove an opponent's piece. The game progresses through distinct phases, and the ultimate goal is to reduce the opponent's pieces to two or completely block their movement.

Rules for Each Variation

Nine Men's Morris

  • Setup:
    • Each player starts with nine pieces.
    • Pieces are placed on a board with 24 intersections, forming a pattern of three connected squares.
    • Players take turns placing one piece at a time on any available intersection.
  • Phases of Play:
    1. Placement Phase: Players take turns placing their pieces on empty intersections.
    2. Movement Phase: Once all pieces are placed, players move one piece per turn to an adjacent empty intersection.
    3. Flying Phase: When a player has only three pieces left, they may "fly" (move to any open space on the board).
  • Capturing Opponent's Pieces:
    • When a player forms a "mill" (three pieces in a row), they can remove one of their opponent’s pieces.
    • A piece that is part of an opponent’s mill cannot be removed unless no other pieces are available.
  • Winning Condition:
    • A player wins by reducing the opponent to two pieces or blocking all legal moves.

Seven Men's Morris

  • Similarities to Nine Men's Morris:
    • The rules remain mostly the same, but each player starts with seven pieces instead of nine.
    • The board is slightly smaller, reducing the number of available moves but a point in the middle is added.
  • Strategic Differences:
    • Due to the smaller number of pieces and the board layout, forming mills is easier but blocking opponents becomes more challenging.

Five \ Six Men's Morris

  • Similarities to Nine Men's Morris:
    • The rules remain mostly the same, but each player starts with five or Six pieces instead of nine.
    • The board is slightly smaller, reducing the number of available moves.
    • Flying is not permitted.

Three Men's Morris

  • Smallest and Quickest Variation:
    • Played on a 3x3 grid.
    • Each player has only three pieces.
    • Flying is not permitted.
    • This might seem like Tic-Tac-Toe but beware of the addition of movement after all pieces are on the board

Rundmühle (Circular Morris)

  • Unique Circular Board Design:
    • Instead of straight lines, the board is a ring-shaped layout with connection points.
    • Same Rules as 3 Men's Norris but mills can be formed around the circular track or across connection points.
    • A mill must have 3 pieces connected by a line without corners
    • Each player has only three pieces.
    • Flying is not permitted.

Morabaraba (Twelve Men's Morris)  / Africa's Version

  • Expanded Board and More Pieces:
    • Played on a larger board with twelve pieces per player.
    • More movement options and strategic depth.
  • Special Rules:
    • Mills can sometimes be formed in diagonal directions (depending on the regional variation played).
    • Often used as a game of skill and strategy in traditional African settings.
