Lucet – Medieval Cord Making Tool

The lucet is a traditional hand tool used for making strong, decorative cords. Its origins date back to the early Middle Ages and it was commonly used by Vikings and other European cultures to create laces, belts, ties, and ornamental braids.

This lucet model is designed with both functionality and aesthetics in mind. The slim, ergonomic shape fits comfortably in the hand, while the decorative details are inspired by historical craftsmanship. It is suitable for beginners learning the lucet technique as well as for experienced crafters.

Uses

  • cord and braid making
  • historical crafts and reenactment
  • jewelry, belts, keychains, decorative elements
  • educational and craft workshops

3D Printing

  • optimized for FDM printing
  • no supports required
  • recommended nozzle: 0.4 mm
  • layer height: 0.2 mm
  • infill: 15–25%
  • material: PLA, PLA+, PETG (wood-filled filament optional)

For the best visual result, two-color printing or hand-painting the decorative details (e.g. with acrylic paint) is recommended.

Notes

The lucet works best with cotton, linen, or wool yarn. The thickness of the finished cord depends on the type of yarn and the chosen braiding technique.
