Description
++ Added two more compartment layouts. Now available in six versions ++
I present to you the Wine Hive - a fully modular wine and bottle rack. Finally a nice way to organize your favorite bottles of wine. No extra parts needed!
BEEing a wine enthusiast myself without yet a proper way to store my delicious grape juice I decided it was time to help myself out.
Since sometimes the bees are more diligent and collect more pollen … I mean wine, it is always nice knowing you can expand your collection to infinity with just one simple click.
Each compartment fits bottles of up to 90mm in diameter so finally your 1L wine bottles can rest lying down aswell.
Modularity:
There are six different sizes with one, two, three and four compartments. There are two version for three and four bottles with the largest only being printable on print beds with sizes exceeding 30x30cm. The compartments are however fully modular and intercombineable with the included clip in adapters. To provide a little more stability to the bottles and keep them centered I also included clip in bottle mounts. Since each hexagon has the exact same dimensions there are virtually no limits on extending the rack, adding different colored compartments, repositioning bottle mounts for different sizes or other clip on accessories.
For the suggested setups and how not to assemble, please refer to the models pictures or to the assembly section below
The dimension of one compartment is 116 x 100,5 x 130,8 mm with 4mm perimeters.
Printing:
Before you start please keep in mind that the models with multiple compartments provide you a much more stable setup than many single compartments cliped together. You might want to make a layout before printing.
For the best look I suggest using a simple base colour for the majority of the rack but print single compartments in highlighting colours.
The clips are a very tight fit. You might have to print them multiple times. I also included a test pice in case you need to make any adjustments.
I printed the models in 0.2mm layers for optimal appearance and mostly for even overhangs. Reducing layer height helps the overhang quality but increases print time. I suggest using a brim for better adhesion, but I also was able to print multiple versions without one. Using 3 walls and Arachne wall generation is strongly suggested, otherwise you might create weak points in the corners. You do not need an AMS
The models are pretty solid so breaking shouldn't be an issue. Though PLA and even PETG can become brittle and creep over time. Be aware of that when you print a storage for expensive beverages.
I printed multiple versions in PLA and PETG and will update as soon as I run into brittle parts or creeping effects.
Print time per compartment is 4 h 49 mins in my print profile. The time per part does scale exactly with the number of compartments.
Assembly:
The Wine Hive comes with clip on adapters with wich you can add diferent compartments together in a very easy plug and play manner.
There are virtually no limits on how you can setup, expand and modify the layout, however there are a few things to bear in mind:
- The clips are a tight fit so they should keep your bottles together. However the rack is still made out of plastic. Bear that and gravity in mind when setting them up.
- You can use different Setups depending on your space.
- To attach a compartment to another I suggest using a minimum of two clips per connection in the central hexagons on both ends. You can vary the placement to any other hexagon though depending on your usage. Setting the connectors further apart will give you a better overall stability in that direction.
- There are also clip in bottle mounts in a universal size to fit most bottles. They also can be placed freely inside each Hive compartment.
- To detach a Clip from a compartment DO NOT PULL on the compartment but use your finger or something round to firmly push the clips out from the inside. Otherwise you might rip your model apart due to the strong clips.
- A full wine bottle weighs around 1,5 kg (3.3 lbs). I strongly advise against using only vertical walls or steeper. Normally at least one horizontal connection to the layer below should be made when stacking compartmens. Do not rely on only vertical connections
The only exception should be the following tip.
- Pro Tip: If your bottles ever so slightly exceed the space inside a compartment, just leave out one compartment when stacking and build the Hive around it. If you attach bottle holders to the upper wall of the lower compartment you might be able to just fit them since you can expand to just over 100 mm in diameter.
- Depending on how likely it is that something shakes the wine rack you can also position bottle holders just on top of a hive compartment to give it a prominent display.
