5-Gallon Bucket Self-Watering Insert (2-Piece Print)

This is a custom self-watering insert designed to fit inside a standard 5-gallon bucket and turn it into a simple sub-irrigated planter.

The insert is split into two printable halves so it can fit on smaller print beds, then be glued together after printing. It includes a top deck with drainage slits and holes, an internal guide sleeve for a 1-inch PVC fill tube, and lower sidewall holes for water movement and drainage. The bottom is open, and the overall shape is tapered to better fit a bucket interior.

I designed this as a practical DIY alternative for anyone who wants to build a self-watering bucket planter without buying a molded insert. It is meant for gardening use, especially for vegetables, herbs, and other container plants.

Assembly
Print the left and right halves, test fit them, then glue them together. A small rectangular backing tab can also be glued across the lower seam for extra strength if needed.

Notes

• Designed around a bucket bottom measurement of about 250 mm
• PVC hole is sized for a snug fit around 1-inch PVC
• Depending on your printer and filament, you may want to slightly adjust clearances
• PETG is recommended for outdoor and wet-use conditions

This model went through several revisions to improve fit, printability, pipe support, and top-surface strength. If you remix it or improve the fit for a specific bucket brand, feel free to share it with the community.
