Description
Hands-Free Crutch for Kids
I recently broke my foot and designed a hands-free crutch for myself. As a father of two small children, this has been a game changer. Experiencing daily life both before and after creating this device made me realize how much more freedom and mobility it provides compared to traditional crutches.
If one of my children were ever to break a foot or injure their leg below the knee, I would absolutely want them to have something like this. That is why I developed a free child-sized version of the hands-free crutch—to help kids around the world gain more independence and improve their quality of life.
My child is 5 years old and about 120 cm tall. At its smallest setting, this version is still slightly too large for her, so I would not recommend it for children under the age of 5. If the size does not fit your child, feel free to reach out and I can look into possible adjustments.
Build video is now out:
Required materials:
The padding must be carefully adjusted to relieve pressure around any cast or injured area.
I have spent a significant amount of time and materials developing a version strong enough to support my weight (95 kg). The adult version is available on Cult3D for a small fee—search for “sindregjertsen”.
Print with sufficient strength, but keep weight in mind. I used 6 walls and 20% infill for the one I use but alot less is needed for a 20kg child. Be sure to print the parts as shown in the 3MF file, as layer adhesion is critical for this design.
I have also included a drawing with measurements for creating a custom bottom piece. This is useful if you want to experiment with different types of feet, such as shoes or duck-foot designs.
Disclaimer:
Print and use at your own risk. A basic level of balance is required. When going down stairs, I found it easiest to walk backwards.
Boost MeI hope this creation reach as many people as possible, that either know or has childeren who has hurt their legs. This can give them alot of their movement back.
