Description

The Pocket Gear Shift is a compact print-in-place fidget that is designed to feel like a tiny manual gear shifter.

Of course, gear-shift-style fidgets already exist, but this model has its own design approach. I focused especially on a compact shape, a comfortable front finger groove, a clean shifting resistance, and gear positions that stay in place after shifting.

Material Recommendation

I recommend printing this model in PETG HF or a similar PETG material.

In PETG, the shifting movement feels smoother and has a more pleasant resistance. Snap nicely into position without feeling too stiff.

PLA also works if needed, but in my own tests the shifting felt a bit rougher. So PLA is possible, but PETG gives the better overall fidget feel.

Important Removal Tip

Please be careful when removing the model from the build plate.

The internal spring mechanism is printed in place and can be damaged if the model is forced off the plate too aggressively.

I recommend letting the build plate cool down first. Alternatively, you can gently bend the plate. In most cases, the model will release almost by itself.

If the main body is already loose but the spring connected to the shift knob is still sticking to the build plate, gently move the shift knob slightly to the side instead of pulling the whole model straight up. Have fun shifting!
