Description
A fun, compact launcher that sends mini parachutes soaring into the sky! This 3D-printed handheld toy is designed for quick launches, smooth operation, and endless outdoor fun. Simply pull back the launcher, load the parachute, and watch it fly before gently floating back to the ground.
Perfect for kids, STEM activities, backyard games, or just testing how high you can launch. The design is lightweight, easy to print, and great for experimenting with different parachute sizes and materials. It can also launch other things that fit.
Print all required parts for the launcher.
You will also need:
Slide the handle into the main body of the launcher.
Line up the holes and secure the handle using the locking pin. You can reach through the open end of the launcher to help align the pin through the small gap.
Slide the tray into the launcher from the open end.
Insert the bar through the tray, making sure the gap in the bar is facing downward.
Hook the rubber bands onto the centre bar.
Stretch them upward and loop them over the clips at the top of the launcher body, then pull them down and secure them into the lower clips as shown in the images.
Your launcher is now assembled!
Cut open a plastic bin bag and flatten it out.
Measure and cut a 50 × 50 cm square from the plastic. If you do not have enough material, you can make a smaller parachute, but keep it square.
Rotate the square 45° so it looks like a diamond.
Fold the left point across to the right point.
Fold the bottom point up to the top point.
Fold the right point up to the top point.
Fold the remaining side over the top so both sides line up evenly.
Your folded parachute should now match the reference images.
Draw a curved line on the folded shape, as shown in the image.
Carefully cut along the line and discard the top off cut, leaving the rounded “ice cream cone” shape.
When unfolded, this will form the parachute canopy.
Cut:
Using a pen or small tool, carefully poke holes just below each gap around the edge of the parachute.
Tie one thread to each hole, then gather and tie all thread ends together at the centre.
The extra-long thread should hang lower than the others. Attach a small weight to this thread, such as:
This helps the parachute fly correctly.
Fold the parachute neatly and pull back the launcher handle.
Hold the handle in place while loading the parachute into the launcher tube.
Aim upward into an open area and launch!
