Description
A compact and robust 3D-printable quarter-turn latch for enclosures, cabinet doors, and DIY projects. The mechanism consists of only four printed parts and operates with a simple 90° rotation between the open and closed positions.
The handle naturally rests in the downward position, allowing gravity to keep the latch closed. This makes it well suited for applications exposed to vibration, such as camper cabinets, workshop furniture, or portable equipment.
The tapered latch arm provides a slight compression effect when closing, allowing doors or panels to be pulled tightly against the frame if required.
The latch is designed for a simple installation using only three drilled holes and common hardware.
No adhesive is required.
Although the parts can be glued together, using screws is strongly recommended. The mechanical connection provides a much stronger assembly and significantly improves rigidity across the layer lines of the printed parts.
If required, the center section of the model can be stretched or elongated in your slicer to accommodate thicker doors without affecting the locking mechanism.
The original design was developed using common flat-head SPAX wood screws, although equivalent metric machine screws work equally well.

The center screw retains the handle and latch assembly while allowing free rotation.
If the latch is modified for thicker or thinner panels, simply adjust the screw lengths accordingly.

This latch was originally designed as part of my custom Ender 3 enclosure project. The goal was to create a simple, reliable, and inexpensive latch that could be printed without supports, assembled with common hardware, and withstand everyday use.
After extensive testing, the design proved to be strong, easy to assemble, and highly reliable. Its gravity-assisted closing action helps prevent accidental opening due to vibration, while the tapered latch provides slight compression without requiring springs or additional hardware.
Since then, the design has been reused for workshop cabinets, acrylic enclosures, camper furniture, and other DIY projects where a compact and dependable quarter-turn latch is needed.
The design is intentionally simple, easy to modify for different material thicknesses, and inexpensive to build. If there is enough interest, I may also release the complete Ender 3 enclosure project that inspired this latch.
