Refillable Activated Carbon Air Filter

This model has a print-in-place pop-out tab that can be used to extract the cartridge from the printer.

I only discovered recently that X1Cs and P1S printers have a Activated Carbon Air Filter that extracts VOCs from the exhaust fan air. And that this filter should be replaced every three months if the printer is used for about 8 hours a day. Or once a month if the printer is used for production. All the solutions that I looked at required adding a tape tab or metal pins for hinged tabs to allow me to pull the filter out of the printer. My design has a print-in-place tab that can be bent out just enough to get your fingertip under, and the mechaism consumes minimum space inside the filter, maximizing the amount of activated carbon pellets that can be used.

The cut-away image shows the tab and hinge mechanism of the design. When the print comes off the printer (before you put any pellets in it) press the (blue) ‘circle’ hard to break the tab free. There will be a distinctive POP when the tab breaks loose. The backstop prevents you from breaking the hinge. The tab should swing out a couple of mm.

Buy Activated Carbon Charcoal Pellets that are used in aquarium or pond filters. And make sure that they are “Acid Free”.

The top slides in, to cover the Activated Charcoal pellets. It's stiff the first time you insert the top, but it loosens up after a few insertions.

To remove the cartridge from the printer, remove the backpanel cover. There are tabs on the top and bottom of the cover that can make it feel like it might break before it comes off, but just pull hard. Then press on the ‘circle’ and put your finger tip or fingernail under the right side of the tab that sticks out to pull the cardridge out of the printer.
