Description
This is the second version of my dragon scale chainmail, a flexible multi-purpose fabric that has been 3D printed on-site. The design is inspired by classic medieval armor, but thanks to modern technology, it’s possible to create a product that is not only visually impressive but also extremely functional. This chainmail can be used for a variety of purposes, ranging from aesthetic and decorative applications to practical ones, such as cosplay costumes, historical reenactment outfits, or as a protective element in certain scenarios. Due to its flexibility, this chainmail can easily adapt to different shapes and surfaces, making it both durable and comfortable.
I have redesigned this chainmail to make managing the individual scales simpler. Now, each individual scale is designed to be easily added or removed as desired, offering the possibility to customize the composition according to your specific needs or aesthetic preferences. Modularity was one of the main improvements introduced in this version compared to the previous one, allowing for unprecedented versatility in the final design. In fact, the great advantage of this new modular structure lies precisely in its customizability: if you wish to change the arrangement of the scales or modify specific areas of the chainmail in the future, you can do so without needing to reprint the entire structure, simply by replacing or rearranging the already printed scales.
To achieve optimal results during the 3D printing process of this project, I recommend using a smooth print bed, possibly treated with a thin layer of hairspray or glue to improve the adhesion of the first layer. It’s important to also pay attention to the printing speed of the first layer, which should not exceed 30 mm/s. This precaution will help avoid initial adhesion problems and ensure a solid foundation for the subsequent printing process. A good first layer is crucial for the success of the project, as each scale is interconnected and depends on the stability of the entire structure.
Another important aspect is that, since the scales of the chainmail are completely interchangeable, during the printing process, one or more scales may have problems or defects. In this case, it is not necessary to interrupt the entire print. On the contrary, I recommend continuing the process without stopping, so as not to compromise the integrity of the structure. Once the print is completed, you can go back to the individual pieces that show defects or irregularities and replace them with new scales without having to reprint the entire project. This approach is made possible by the modular nature of the chainmail and allows you to save both time and materials. The ability to make post-print adjustments is a significant advantage over traditional models, which require replacement or reworking of entire sections.
In conclusion, the dragon scale chainmail represents an evolution in the field of 3D-printed armor and accessories. Its modularity and customizability offer a level of flexibility that makes it suitable for numerous uses and applications, from practical to aesthetic needs.
