Description

In an effort to make a physical interactive manipulative of the double slit experiment, this model sweeps out a pattern made by two coherent waves as they “interact” with each other with constructive and destructive interference. While the full amplification of constructive interference isn't completely represented with this design, it is still clear where the the “bright and dark spots" would appear as a result of the interactions. The wave forms emanate from the two “slits” in the wall and can rotate to show the wave's bending due to diffraction. When the waves overlap in phase, the constructive interference results in a maximum.

This design is updated from version 1 found here with the primary improvement being in how the wave forms are connected and interacted with.

Printing notes:

  • The waveforms can be a challenging print due to bed adhesion issues but an added skirt usually fixes the problem
  • The double slit model plate prints a little nicer with a 0.16 layer height. Printing in silk (multicolor or gradient) does a nice job of accenting the waveform shape that is produced

Assembly notes:

  • Once printed, the “key” should just press fit into the slot on the circular portion of the waveform model
  • The two waveforms sit into the slots in the wall as the curvature holds them in place while still allowing them to rotate in a sweeping motion
