Description

Here it is! Filament Darts. Try recycling filament for the point. Set up a cardboard box for a target and you're in business. Also works with those hole-filled plastic targets everybody seems to have.

Update: New models! Significantly more beefy. This should address breakage. Here's a test. Take your 3D prints and throw them at the wall. See how they hold up.

  • Added small ribs to the tails to increase layer adhesion.
  • Wider stems
  • Extended centers down to the build plate.

Filament Tips. How to attach.

  • Insert a piece of durable/flex filament or whatever is available to serve as the point.
  • The snap test. Try to snap the filament rapidly in half.  If it breaks, don't use it.
  • Friction fit with no adhesive. I found the best way is to ream the hole out to the right size and jam the filament in 1mm at a time with pliers.
  • Round tips with sandpaper, or “heat and shape” method.

Flex settings. Flex filament recommended. TPU will probably work with nylon profiles. Just use filament overrides to disable retraction.

  • TPU 98A flex filament.
  • 30% speed
  • 100% infill, for strength
  • Filament must be dry! Dry filament won't need retraction.
  • Flex filament is tough to push through the nozzle as it is.
  • 100% fan (or print multiple parts to allow cooling between layers).
  • If printing one at a time, fan ducts should aim from at least two directions.
  • Decrease temp -10°C for threads and other fine details.

Experimental nylon.3mf files uploaded!

I assumed brittle PLA would break on a hard floor. But this model bounces. The tail fins are acting like a spring. Settings were the same as PETG, but prints faster due to material selection.

PETG seems to be surviving normal usage with these new designs.

  • .3mf file with Prusa PETG settings included.
  • Variable layer height
  • 100% infill
  • 210°C, reduced to 200°C for the filament hole
  • slow speed 3mm^2/s
  • 100%fan
  • Brim, and no supports

Plastic Dart Thread Pitch

The thread pitch for plastic dart tips can vary based on the type of dart and its components. The most common thread sizes for soft tip darts are 2BA (British Association) and 1/4 inch. Here are some details about the thread sizes for plastic dart tips.

This model is 2BA Thread Size:

  • The 2BA thread size is a common standard for soft tip darts. It has an outer diameter of 4.70mm, a core hole diameter of 3.73mm, and a pitch of 0.81mm
  • Soft tip dart points compatible with 2BA size dart corkscrew are available
    • "2ba" is the most common size for the threading for soft tip points and shafts.

1/4 Inch Thread Size:

  • 1/4 inch is another common threading size for soft tip darts, especially for “bar darts”
  • Soft tip dart points with a 1/4" thread size are compatible with 1/4" size dart corkscrew
