2025-04-10 Update - Version 1.2

In response to several folks whose games have much thicker tokens than my game has, I have redesigned some parts of this insert to better accommodate these "thick tokens," as well as made some minor enhancements to a couple areas. In addition, I have repackaged the insert in a similar fashion to my later inserts for Lacerda games (Escape Plan, The Gallerist, and Vinhos) which should make it easier to find and print the needed/desired parts.

The changes from the previous version are overall fairly minor. Most significantly, the two "setup_level_X.stl" files have been redesigned to hold the thickest tokens I've encountered. This resulted in the "Setup box" being slightly (0.75mm) taller than before, which in turn means that all the parts that sit below the player boards are correspondingly taller.

Only the two setup box insert parts ("setup_level_X.stl") actually have variations for "thick" (up to 3.2mm thick) vs. "thin" tokens (up to 2.85mm thick)—all other parts are designed for the thick tokens but work fine for thinner tokens. Measure the height of all 12 Royal Favor tiles stacked vertically. If the height is less than 34.3mm, you have "thin" tokens, if it is more, you have "thick" tokens. If you are still unsure, I recommend you start by printing the non-thick version of the "setup_box_level_2.stl" part and check how the Royal Favor and Public Building tokens fit in the middle row. If they don't all fit, you have "thick" tokens and should print the two "thick" token "setup_level_X.stl" models.

If you have already printed a prior version of this insert but have the thicker tokens and want to "upgrade" to this version, you can reuse all the lids from the earlier version as well as the "political_cards_box.stl" model as they are identical. You will have to reprint the "setup_box.stl" and both "setup_level_X.stl" models. You can decide if you want to reprint all the other boxes so that everything aligns under the player boards as the new setup box is 0.75mm taller than the old one and will stick up slightly over the older models.

Description

This is an insert designed to fit the Deluxe Edition (w/ Upgrade Pack) of the Vital Lacerda board game Lisboa by Eagle-Gryphon Games. (It might not fit older/different versions of the game, as it seems some of the meeples have been changed in the Deluxe Edition/Upgrade Pack.) I designed this to help speed game setup and fully support premium sleeves. Highlights include:

  • Many components can go straight to the table by simply removing a lid.
  • Two each of Reis and Goods tokens boxes, one each for opposite ends of the table.
  • Choice of boxes with lids or boxes without lids.
  • Many embossments to help identify the contents of boxes. Emboss options include multi-color, single-color, "negative," or none.
  • No lid lift.

I didn't like the way the provided vacuum-formed insert worked (or, really, didn't) with sleeved cards, so this insert completely replaces the provided insert.

In the included images you will see that I printed some parts in white and some in black. The black parts are all those which are intended to be placed on or near the game board. (These are the parts that can really reduce setup time.) The white parts are all parts which hold components but are returned to the box during the game. You, of course, are free to print these however you like. There are also a few parts printed in gray which are essentially "filler" parts which can hold things like the extra replacement pieces the game comes with, but primarily are there to keep everything else in place.

I generally prefer to have lids on my boxes to help ensure everything stays in place even if the game box lid lifts a little bit. However, I have created lidless box options for those who prefer open-top boxes. These open-top boxes end up being the same exact size as their corresponding boxes with lids so you can mix and match the styles if you should desire.

This design also offers numerous options for embossed images which make it easier to determine the contents of each box (as well as to look cool). Options here are:

  • some lids with multi-color embossments (the goods box and stores box lids can be easily painted multi-color)
  • single-color embossments
  • a "negative" embossments option for “setup_lbox_level_2.stl”
  • no embossments at all.

The box for this game is substantially larger than is needed to hold all the content, so there are also a couple of filler box which can hold whatever you might want. (These store tiles  and these public buildings are nice options 😉).

**Printing Instructions**

I have provided 3mf files with all the supported configurations for each box, as well as a single "common_parts.3mf" file for all the parts that have only a single configuration. To complete this insert, print every plate of the "common_parts.3mf" file. For all the other 3mf files print only the plate(s) for the desired configuration (i.e, either a "Box w/ lid" and a corresponding "Lid", or just the "Box w/o lid", choosing from the available embossment options). These 3mf files were created with OrcaSlicer 2.3.0. If you use another slicer, the settings might not import, in which case you will want to apply the following settings:

Layer height: 0.16 for "box w/ lid" and "lid" plates, 0.20 is fine for everything else
First layer height: 0.20
Infill: 10% Gyroid recommended.
Wall generator: Arachne strongly recommended for any embossed part.

If you have issues with the 3mf files (or are just more comfortable working with STL files), I have also provided the STLs in all the supported different configurations. These are organized by their configurations (as named on the zip file)—not by part as the 3mf files are—so you will have to make sure you find and print each part needed.

Please note that I have only actually printed the models shown in the photos. (These are the "boxes w/ lids" and "lids" with the most complex embossments.) I have, however, closely checked all the other variations in the slicer and believe them to be accurate and functional.

The boxes with lids (and their corresponding lids) print best at 0.16 layer height (0.4 nozzle), but 0.20 is OK for everything else. You really want to use 0.16 (or lower) for the boxes with lids—and the lids themselves—as there are some small but steep overhangs that are supported much better by a slightly smaller layer height. (Check your slicer preview.) No supports are needed if you print at 0.16 or less. If you use the provided .3mf files, these settings should already be set for you.

I printed these with 10% gyroid infill, and 5 top layers to ensure nice, smooth top surfaces. PLA+ works great for all of these models.

Finally, the lids for all the boxes are friction fit and fit the bottom of their boxes so they don't get lost during play. The tolerances on these can be somewhat tight, but they came out beautifully on my Bambu X1C.

The number of copies of a model you need to print is indicated by an "_x" suffix on the file name. If there is no "_x" suffix, then you just need one.

(Note: I have removed all the files from the older versions to ensure there is no confusion as to what models go together. The latest design should be the best regardless of which thickness of tokens you have.)
