After years of thought and experimentation I created a unique and actual 500 piece jigsaw puzzle that is 3D printed. These pieces are approximately the same sizes as traditional jigsaw puzzle pieces, although they are slightly taller than wide to ease assembly.
Design notes:
- The pieces are organized by row (A, B, C …). Each row is a separate .3mf.
- I used .3mf as the pieces are named by position and pre-colored for filament
- There are 500 pieces (25 across and 20 down) with a piece thickness of 2.2mm
- I designed the pieces with slightly more height than width to help with piece identification and placement. The fit is somewhat snug.
- I designed this for PrusaSlicer, but I opened the .3mf in Bambu Studio and it appears to look okay, all you need to do is change the filament colors
- I designed the pieces to facilitate printing with 3 different filaments (1=bronze, 2=white, 3=black), ymmv
- The puzzle text and Poe sketch areas are inset from the main puzzle surface by .1mm. This facilitates using both the layer height and smart fill filament painting process to product the bronze background and black Poe sketch
- A part name with a ‘-’ suffix indicates the piece has a graphic element, a suffix of ‘+’ indicates the piece has both text and graphic elements and no suffix indicates the piece is either blank or has just text.
- The default piece (body) filament color is white. I found this produces better text
- I use PrusaSlicer multi-filament painting to assign colors by layer height using a LH of .1
- Use the LH paint function to assign bronze to the background surface, this will cause the text to show the main body color of white
- Use the PrusaSlicer filament painting ‘smart fill’ to paint the Poe sketch areas black
- This can be a challenging puzzle as there are appx a dozen pieces that are colored just bronze. The puzzle design should make it somewhat straightforward to avoid getting the wrong piece in the wrong position. Assemble the border first, then the text portion. The Poe sketch area will be more challenging.
- This was a very, very difficult project with thousands of minuscule details; if there are any errors please let me know.
Print notes:
- I tried to implement a strategy of inter-piece gap that prints well on both PLA or PETG, however I have found that PLA produces a slightly better and more usable puzzle piece. PLA shrinks more than PETG, so how tightly the puzzle pieces fit will depend upon your filament and printer tolerances. ymmv as the inter-piece spacing is only .05mm, to accommodate print shrinkage.
- I used PrusaSlicer to print the pieces on an OPXL5H using input shaper, .4 nozzles, .25 layer height, Polymaker ProLite PLA (Bronze, white, black), 20% fill gyroid.
- The .3mf files have the three different applied color areas pre-defined. If you use Prusa Slicer you should be able to just swap out the nextruder 1, 2, 3 filaments to suit your liking.
- I attached several screenshots that illustrate the painting process in the event you decide to recolor the pieces.
- This puzzle requires appx 650g of PLA filament.
On Poe:
- Most folks associate Edgar Allen Poe with horror, but he wrote a number of other genres like “A Dream Within a Dream”. He was also one of the first writers of science fiction.
- Poe's works may seem wordy, but when you read his work aloud you suddenly realize there is a definite cadence to the words that changes both the tension and emotion of the story as he plays with your mind.
