Description
Internally, this is a common Diagonal Burr (aka Star Burr). Like the Diagonal Burr, there are six identical pieces. But while a Diagonal Burr assembles into a stellation of the rhombic dodecahedron, these pieces assemble into a Stella Octangula, the stellation of the regular octahedron. A Stella Octangula can also be viewed as a tetrahedron combined with its dual.
This puzzle was designed by Bruce Patterson. The basic piece has two parts which touch only along an edge, which presents significant 3D printing difficulties. The printer can't render this edge, and it will show up as a gap (visible in the first prototype, green pieces). I added a thin fillet to the outside of this edge, which removes the gap and also means that the piece no longer requires supports.
Print six copies of the piece. If you are familiar with the Diagonal Burr, you will not find assembly hard. Taking it apart is more difficult.
I have truncated the sharp tips to make this puzzle more user friendly. I also added bumps to each face to give it a more interesting look. The bumps also aid the disassembly.
