Description
Six pieces assemble into a flat star shape which doubles as a trivet. I increased the size from the original wood version (made by Black Dog Puzzles). The trivet is about 7" or 18 cm across, and 1/2" or 1 cm thick.
If you intend to use this under a hot serving plate, I recommend printing in a heat resistant material. PETG is better than PLA, but ideally use something which can handle temperatures over 100 C. The models in black/ white/ orange are made from Polycarbonate (Prusa PC Blend), which is heat resistant to 115 C.
The standard puzzle is three copies of piece S and three copies of piece B. An easier version uses six copies of S. Note that the pieces are labeled on the inside for easy identification. Both versions can be assembled by pairing pieces and assembling the three pairs, as shown in the assembly guide. The easier version also comes apart or goes together in halves (three pieces in each half).
Two versions of the pieces are included. Stl files ending in 0.1 fit more tightly than those ending in 0.2 (the offset, or extra space, is set to 0.1 mm or 0.2 mm, respectively). I use the tight pieces (0.1) for PLA and PETG, and the loose pieces (0.2) for Polycarbonate. If unsure, use the loose pieces. The wood version shown in the photos tends to be very tight, and it is better to err on the size of loose.
After assembly, you can use it as a trivet and never take it apart. Curious guests may wonder how it was ever assembled.
The wood version shown in the photos was Marc Pawlinger's IPP40 exchange puzzle.
