Description

Lightning tank from Planetside 2 with moveable turret and gun barrel.

Chassis has been cut in two to make use of the better XY resolution of most printers and prevent layer lines along the top curved surfaces.

Notes:

The STL files are already in the best orientation for printing (though the orientation for the engine doesn't seem to matter much). Everything is printed with supports. The tracks were printed on rafts, but that might not be necessary.

Post-Printing =============

Glue together the two halves of the chassis. The two halves can be aligned before gluing using the engine block, which is printed separately and fits snugly into the chassis halves. Insert the turret into the hole in the chassis. The gun barrel snaps onto a rod in the turret so it doesn't fall off but can be rotated. Glue the tracks in place.

How I Designed This

Modeled with Fusion 360 using the original STL for the dimensions. The original STL seems to be exported straight from the game and contains many small details which are almost impossible to 3D print, so I spent most of the time simplifying things like hatches and handles so they're visible when printed.

I also separated the tracks, turret, gun barrel, and engine block at the back so they can be printed separately. Perhaps most importantly, the main chassis has been cut in two so it can be printed on its side. This gives the best printing resolution along the curved surfaces by preventing layer lines.

I also added some details to make the model look closer to the in-game version - notably some grooves in the front chassis and the shape of gun barrel tip.
