Description
This model is inspired by the Mk2 Command Pod from the Making History expansion of Kerbal Space Program — itself based on the real-life NASA Gemini capsule. The in-game 3D models were used to determine the overall dimensions and shape.
The model has been adapted for use as a toy (thick walls, reinforced door hinges). It does not include seats. Instead, the interior floor space is enlarged so you can place 3D-printed Kerbal figures (links to the models are provided at the end of this text), scaled at 1:2. In other words, Kerbals enlarged to double size will fit this capsule. If you want a capsule model for Kerbals in their original size, you need to scale all capsule parts down by 50%.
In addition to the detachable heat shield, the model features opening doors and an opening parachute compartment. The window inserts for the doors can be made from a PET bottle.
For assembling the capsule, you can use screws with a diameter of 3 mm and a length of 10 mm. For the door hinges and the parachute housing, use 3 mm bolts or screws.
The heat shield is attached using 3×3 mm magnets.
The parachute housing includes a mounting post for attaching a real fabric parachute (for those who know how to sew). I have not tested what size the parachute should be to allow the capsule to descend safely. You may need to reduce the number of perimeters during printing to make the capsule lighter if you want to build a flying model.
