Description
Ultimate Egg Drop Capsule
Cub Scouts, Classroom or STEM Projects
This project started as a Cub Scouts egg drop challenge for my grandson and turned into one of those builds that was just too fun not to share.
A 3D-printed, screw-together capsule designed to protect a standard chicken egg during an egg drop competition. It also doubles as a toy, payload capsule, or general-purpose “what happens if we drop this?” experiment—because curiosity is kind of the point.
Both large and extra-large eggs were tested and survived drops intact.
Two-piece design with threads that screw together securely
Sized for a standard egg, with room for padding
Works great for:
Cub Scout / school egg drop challenges
STEM activities
Payload drops
Kids’ toys and imaginative play
I used a parachute from an old model rocket, attached with string, and added a few cotton balls inside for extra cushioning and protection.
Material: TPU strongly recommended
Layer height: 0.2 mm
Perimeters: 3
Infill: 0%
Supports: Not required in most cases (printer/settings dependent)
TPU gives the capsule a bit of flex, which really helps absorb impact. PLA can work, but TPU is where this design shines.
Off the main path. Worth the journey.
A curated collection of passion builds, pop-culture tributes, and creative detours—made to explore ideas beyond the main mission.
