Description
These items were designed to represent the world (region) map during TTRPG . I hope the idea of how it works is clear from the photos. If it is not, some description is in the end.
I made it because I have neither time, nor space, nor desire to build significant decorations for each game session, but at the same time I want:
- the players had the freedom to choose the direction of movement, while their choice should really influence the events.
- the players couldn't see a location they hadn't arrived at yet, and I wouldn't need to draw the map during the game session (in other words, I need the "fog of war")
- battles took place on a field that provides sufficient space for tactical actions, as well as allowing for the use of environmental features (trees, walls, furniture, etc.).
In addition, I also prefer miniatures about 60mm high (28mm is too small in my opinion).
As a result, in order to achieve all of the above, I divided the maps into three levels:
1. Small–scale - with hexagonal grid. For example, a map of a region with cities, villages, fields, and forests. Or a map of a single city divided into districts.
2. Medium–scale - with square grid. For example, a plan of a dungeon, manor or fortress, which shows the location of rooms, caves, and tunnels. (still working on)
3. The battlefield - with hexagonal grid. Shows the place where the battle is taking place. You can check it here:
In the game it looks like this: the players decide where to go and remove the appropriate tile. I tell them where they are and what is going on. Sometimes I hide a marker with a question mark under some tiles. If the heroes find one, they draw a card from the deck of events. So I create some intrigue not only for them, but also for myself.
If the heroes get into trouble (for example, they stumble upon a pack of wolves in the forest), then I put a battlefield on top of the map of the region, place obstacles or interactive objects on it, and the battle begins. After the battle, I collapse the battlefield and we are back at the region level.
Sometimes all three levels will be stacked. For example, heroes walked through the forest -> entered the dungeon -> came across ghouls, a fight ensued.
