Description
Evolution is about to come to the EDDC box. The model is now around for quite a while and its time for an update.
Whats new:
The first major change comes to the hinges and closing mechanism. Print in place is nice, but the horizontal hinges in the previous version might be tricky for some printers to handle. So I decided to switch to bolts as hinges. Rugged bixes are nothing new and a well established principal, so why not use it here for our most precious treasures to keep.
Keeping the box closed with magnets was nice, but not 100% safe, especially if the box dropped on hard floor. With the new latches, your dice will be safe even in tough situations.
But theres more, especially more space, or less space. I made different sized boxes to fit your personal needs the best way. If there are other sizes you need, let me know, I'll add them.
Formats:
The EDDC_Pro comes with its own basic rectengular grid inserts. But I made one classic version thats the same dimensions as the old one and will work with the available inserts here.
The new sizes come with 2 inserts each. The regular insert has evenly spaced square 26mm by 26mm slots. The shifted version has slightly smaller slots 26mm by 25mm, excpet for the outer most, which are a bit wider, which should work for larger d20s and also compensate the small chamfer in the corner. There are also blank blocks so you can use your slicer and negative volume blocks to make your own custom inserts.
I made 3mf files for each box, containing the box, the hinge and latch and the inserts, already spread on different builtplates. Personally I like to print the latches, hinges and inserts in a different color then the box. But I also included all files as individual STL files.
And finally there are cutting templates for each size (classic box has its template with the inserts). PDF files in A4 or US letter sized paper. Print in original size.
Print Settings:
Best to print in PETG for durability, but PLA or other materials will work as well.
Structural or Speed 0.2mm profiles, 2 walls
Latches and hinges with 3 walls ore more
No supports
The hinges might need some adjustment via XY compensation to get a nice fit. The latches should close snuggly, but not to hard. If the latches are too loose, increase xy-compensation, to tight decrease xy-compensation. No need to change anything on the box or inserts.
Assembly and Hardware:
You need two parts of each component and 8 bolts:
2 Boxes
2 Hinges
2 Latches
2 Inserts (optional one or none)
8 M3x30mm
The box has holes to directly screw the bolt in. No need for tapping, nuts or inserts here. Just be gentle not to overtighten and strip the plastic. A good way to check this, keep the hinge or latch part moving while tightening the bolt. When the hinge or latch gets stuck, turn a bit back until it moves free again. Thus you get the perfect fit. This method keeps the bolt very secure, like on a locknut the thread is pressed into the plastic. But its still replaceable and can be used multiple times, if you want to replace a part.
If you like this idea, but still want to check out the classic EDDC with magnets, find the boxes here in this collection.
Disclaimer: The dice in the pictures are my own creation, if you're interested in that, check out my Instagram profile and contact me there. Same for print on demand. I don't have a shop and do commissions and print on demand as my time allows.
