It is an evolution of the DC-10, featuring a stretched fuselage, increased wingspan with winglets, an advanced two crew six screen EFIS flight deck, restyled main cabin interior and new engine options.
Its first delivery was to Finnair in 1990, and later it served a number of major airlines including KLM, SWISS, American Airlines, Delta and Thai. In total 200 MD-11’s were delivered.
