Description

This model is a collection of a full set of Stratego Alive cards. Although the text on the cards is in Dutch, the game can still be played by only using the numbers on the cards. In fact, only playing by the numbers makes it easier. There are many variations on the ‘Stratego Alive’ game, printing a full set of these cards ensures you can play all variants. These are the amounts of cards per card type that needs to be printed:

  1. Spion (Spy): 2 cards.
  2. Verkenner (Scout): 10 cards.
  3. Mineur (Miner): 6 cards.
  4. Sergeant (Sergeant): 9 cards.
  5. Luitenant (Lieutenant): 8 cards.
  6. Kapitein (Captain): 7 cards.
  7. Majoor (Major): 6 cards.
  8. Kolonel (Colonel): 5 cards.
  9. Generaal (General): 4 cards.
  10. Maarschalk (Marshal): 1 card.
  • Vlag (Flag): 1 card.
  • Bom (Bomb): 6 cards.

Two sets of these amounts of cards need to be printed, preferably with a different color to easily differentiate the two sets for the two teams playing the game. The game is preferably played in a forest, where there are two ‘home bases’ set up a distance from each other. Two teams go into the field and try to tag each other. A basic version of the game uses these rules to determine who wins when a tag occurs:

  • The higher number wins when no other rules apply.
  • Only the spy (rank 1) can defeat the marshal (rank 10).
  • Only the miner (rank 3) can defeat a bomb.
  • Bombs are not allowed to tag anyone. They can only be tagged and defeat every rank, except for miners (rank 3).

The game is won only when the marshals of both teams are returned and collected together in one of the teams homebases. When also playing with the ‘flag’ card, the flag is usually allowed to hide before other players enter the field, or the card itself is hidden in the field somewhere. If the flag is used, the game is only won when both flags AND both marshals are returned to one of the home bases. This set of cards is best used in a group with between 20 to 40 people (10-20 persons per group) and can take (depending on when the marshal enters the field) anywhere between 30 minutes and an hour, also depending on the amount of players and the size of the field. A lot of variations on these rules are possible, to make the game shorter, longer or suitable for smaller groups.

The sets in the pictures are printed in glow in the dark filament, with satin blue. The glow in the dark effect lasts long enough to be useable in a field (100% infill), so the game is even playable in a dark field. Just make sure to shine a bright light on the cards before handing them out to the players. This project took almost a kilogram of filament to complete all the cards.

The files are labeled in directories, according to their rank and name (in Dutch). Every folder contains 2 STL files:

  1. The card itself, with the text and icon cut out.
  2. The text itself.

Combining these two files in prusaslicer, this print can be made multicolour, even without an MMU unit. In fact, the cards in the pictures were printed without an MMU, by using multiple extruders in PrusaSlicer. Drag both of the files to PrusaSlicer and PrusaSlicer will add filament switch commands to the gcode. Printing the cards upside down (with the text side on the bed) ensures that the layer switch happens in the beginning of the print and if the nozzle is just the right height from the bed, text side of the card will be smooth to prevent dirt buildup.

Printing settings used:

  • Nozzle size: 0.4mm (good enough to clearly print the text and icons)
  • Infill: 100%
  • Ironing: no
  • Initial layer height (text layer down): 0.28mm
  • Layer height: 0.2mm
  • Perimeters: 3
