Description

Don't lose your lip balm!

The temptation is real: twist that little dial on your lip balm or lipstick to extend it, then twist it back. But, I'm sure you or someone you know has experienced the time when you twist it just a little too far and, PLOP, it falls to the ground.

Don't worry and have fun!

This printed toy is meant to mimic the size and action of a lip balm or lipstick container, allowing you to try that satisfying twist action, all while not worrying about the mess.

Straight-forward print and assembly

There are five pieces to the print, none of which require any supports. PLA is going to be your best bet for this print and make sure your cooling is decent.

Print settings:

  • Standard PLA temperatures for your printer and filament of choice
  • Ensure proper cooling for overhangs and bridges (100% fan)
  • 0.2mm layer height - this ensures that the gap between the knob and case is of the appropriate size

The case is meant to be printed in one piece: the outer shell and screw mechanism. However, this means it will need just a little persuasion to get it loose so that it can twist. You must have your printer printing well and use good filament - any over-extrusion and your day will be ruined.

  1. Once the case is printed, either try to loosen the shell from the bottom by gently rocking and twisting it while it is still anchored to the build plate. Alternatively, if that doesn't work, you can use a thin blade and carefully work it between the twist knob and the case. If you do this, you must be an adult and accept the risk. A slipped blade can cut you badly
  2. Once the knob can rotate freely, place the larger piece of the stick on to the screw and gently twist the knob in a counter-clockwise direction (when looking at the bottom as shown) to lower the stick all the way down
  3. Carefully insert the retainer clip using some needle-nose pliers and use the pliers to push the clip in place until there is a small click and it is secured. This retainer is optional but will help prevent the stick from falling out when extended all the way
  4. Twist the stick back up to reveal the threaded portion
  5. Now screw on the cap of the stick
  6. Finally, lower the stick back down and place the cap on. If your cap is too tight, try scaling it up in the X and Y dimensions only by 0.1mm or 0.2mm at a time and reprint it.

Now, whenever you feel the need to fidget, pull off the cap and twist that knob; don't worry, the retainer clip will hold the stick on with all but the most powerful twists. (Don't twist too hard or you're liable to break the screw or the small guide bumps.)

Enjoy and share your prints!
