Darwins Journey - Box game inserts

I was thrilled to receive the long awaited Darwin's Journey by Thundergryph Games. I backed this game on KS in Januari 2021. The box of the base game arrived in April 2023, so after some unpacking I felt the box needs inserts… So I made them.

This is for the BASE game only (and the gift scenario mini expansion)!

Pick ONE of the following:

Larger printers (at least 230x80x40 build volume): print box 1 and 2 once, print box 3 twice and box 4 four times.

Smaller printers (at least 180x80x40 build volume): print box 1A, 1B, 2A, 2B, 3A all once and box 4 four times.

Update 2023-06-04: Added smaller printer versions. You can always choose this even if you have a bigger printer. Pros: I really like box 1A/B over box 1, Cons: Box 3A feels out of place, with the rest fitting so nicely.

Update 2024-02-04: Fixed Box 1B for smaller printers.

Update 2025-04-01: Variant for thicker cardboard used in second print (?!)

Details larger printers

Box 1 goes right side of the game box, Box 2 goes bottom side, put main board and player boards in top left. Box 3 goes bottom right. Boxes 4 (player pieces, 4x) sit on top of the board, but right of the player boards. Manual goes up top.

Box 1: needed for over half of the game setup pieces. The numbers in box 1 are the corresponding steps in the Game Setup (page 4/5 of the manual): steps 2, 3, 4, 8, 9, 10, 15, 16

Box 2: needed for the crew cards (see manual pages 6/7), knowledge tokens (step 17) and wax seals (steps 5, 6, 7). 

Box 3: needed for the remaining pieces: the research tokens and coins (step 17). You could use the tops and bottoms for the four piles of step 17.

Box 4: needed for all the Player Pieces (see manual page 6).

Details smaller printers

The numbers in the boxes are the corresponding steps in the Game Setup (page 4/5 of the manual).

Box 1A: steps 2, 3, 4 and 8, 9, 10

Box 1B: steps 15, 16, 17 and 18

Box 2A: steps 5, 6, 7 (there are only 5 different tokens, and 6 slots, but you could put step 5 there)

Box 2B: holds crew cards (see manual pages 6/7)

Box 3A: holds research tokens (the glass droplets, step 17)

Box 4: needed for all the Player Pieces (see manual page 6)

Variant 2025

The 2025 variant for bottom Box 1A and 1B fit the original top. This is to take care of a slight increase in cardboard used for a second print run. If you measure the stack of "step 1" card tokens the new version needs 94x27mm where the original KS version needs only 94x25mm. If you have the newer version: please print bottom 1A and bottom 1B of the 2025 update!
