UPDATE 3/24/2024: I removed the banana and rocket carts
Version 2.0 has been uploaded. Everything has been revamped with the exception of Cube.stl, Slope 1.stl and Slope 2.stl. The new rail system allows the cart to ride along it without falling off, even if it's turned upside down.
The cart has a lip and the rail rides between that lip and the wheels, keeping it from falling off.
The cart is also customizable, allowing for a cart skin to be connected via a 4mm x 4mm peg. I have included two skins, the X-51 Nether Rocket X-TREME and a Banana. I'll make more in the future and would love to see some community created cart skins.
The Banana Cart is a remix of Banana 01 by Printables user Wilko
The X-51 is a remix of Rocket by Sketchfab user Mateus Schwaab
A couple days after the Building Blocks contest started, I sat down with the intention of making something to enter and when it was all said and done, I had made an articulated Monarch Butterfly instead \_(ツ)_/
A couple days after that, I gave it another go, and here we are.
Using the different block, track and rail types, you can build your very own miniature roller coaster. The blocks connect together via a sliding dovetail joint as seen below.
The blocks also stack on top of each other, as seen in the pictures below.
NOTES:
6/19/23: I've added a Star Trek Enterprise cart. I used glue to hold the pieces even though they were a snug fit.
6/17/23: I've updated Cube.stl to fix a vertical connection issue.
5/29/23: Roller Coaster Creator v2.0 is on the way and I should have that uploaded by next week. I have reworked the slopes and corners to allow for a cart to ride nice and smooth along a brand new rail system that keeps the cart from flying off the track, even if it's turned upside down. The cart has also been completely remade and will be customizable.
5/26/23: I've added another corner and in doing so, I found a better way to connect the rails, track and block together. The existing tracks and rails will be updated in the future to connect this same way. I've uploaded one, two and three block versions of this new corner.
5/25/23: I've added the pieces reddit user LiquidAether had suggested for the sliding dovetail. Pieces include 2x1, 2x2, 2x3, 1x2, and 1x3. Hopefully, these help to cut down on the amount of pieces needed for larger builds.
Also, I'm working on a completely new corner and should have that up shortly.
5/21/23: I received a lot of great feedback on my reddit post about the Roller Coaster Creator, and there were a couple of suggestions in there that I felt had to be implemented. The first is doing away with the sliding dovetail joint in favor of a magnetic setup. I used 3mm x 1mm magnets, and the results were good. Thanks to reddit user Akita_Attribute for the inspiration.
The files for the magnetic version can be found in the “Mag Blocks” folder.
The other suggestion, from reddit user LiquidAether, is “larger support sections, like a 2x2 or 3x1 in order to make taller structures without just having hundreds of 1x1 cubs.” Which is a fantastic idea, and you can expect that in the near future in both sliding dovetail and magnetic versions.
The cart is still a work in progress. I have another version that I'll upload. It handles the corners better but still not good enough.
