Note: if you like this model, please check out my update and more detailed model: https://www.printables.com/model/920688-smaller-x-37b-with-opening-pl-bay-doors

To see my 16 inch X-37B version take a look at: https://www.printables.com/model/738189-boeing-x-37b-orbital-test-vehicle-x-37

The X-37 was derived from AFRL's Military Spaceplane program, X-40, which was derived from MiST (Mini-Spaceplane Technology program) which was derived from Rockwell's ReFly program. The X-37 is the same size as the X-40B vehicle, which was never built.

Aside from the history, I had decided to print the X-37 and I sent it to a friend but realized I hadn't included the body flap. He asked if I could include an articulating flap. Well, here is an X-37 with my attempt at an articulating body flap. The one I finally got printed actually has the articulating flap.

This version of the model consists of 7 pieces which you can print multiple options together or as all separate pieces and glue them together. My first print included all as a single print with the vehicle horizontal (no articulating flap). A lot of removing support for the wings and some from the bottom. The top of the body showed the filament lines. Printing the body vertically separately makes for a much smoother finish.

If you want to have the flap articulate, then obviously you have to print it separate and snap it in. (a hint - I cut a very small notch on the right side of the body to help the nipple on the flap a little, this makes it easier to snap in). The nozzle slides right in.

All pieces print separately with no problem except for the rudders. They are so small and thin they will have a tendency to fall over about 70% the way through. If you get to 80% then you are probably going to be successful. I went through about seven print attempts with differing settings. What finally worked for me was printing them as solid parts and using Arachne wall modeling. My layer height was 0.08 for fine printing, but 0.2 may be more successful. I don't know if any settings guarantee success.

I printed the body and wings with white PLA and the rudders, the nozzle and body flap with black PLA.

I will put some decals on my model and then load that picture. It the meantime, have fun and good luck with the rudders.

By the way, if someone notices that the flap will move up and hit the nozzle, this I know, but Boeing instituted software to prevent this, so I decided not to worry about it. ;-)

PM: Forgot to add; on this model I extruded the payload bay doors just enough to allow them to be easily painted.

8 /17/2023 update: I updated the files to version5: I redid the front section to make the nose have a smoother transition to the main body.

6/30/2024 update: Note that I uploaded a newer more detail version: https://www.printables.com/model/920688-smaller-x-37b
