Description

Invented in 1884 by a Harvard medical student, the Halma board game is surprisingly fun for how simple the game is. The original design was 16x16 squares aimed at 4 players. This variant is 10x10 squares and only designed for 2. Perfect for date night or on the go fun with the board measuring just under 6 inches square.

I would like to say that I did not create this game only the board and the pieces associated with it. This game has been in my family for generations and I find it to be an enjoyable pastime with friends or family when we visit each other. Its a simple game, though there will always be a strategy that can help you win! This is a perfect game for younger kids and adults alike. My grandmother taught my mom how to play, and my mom taught me. I would love for this game to live on in the hearts, minds, and homes of those interested.

What You Will Need:

  • 1 Halma Board
  • 10 Halma Pawns in color A
  • 10 Halma Pawns in color B

For best results, print pawns standing up with support. The board requires no supports. You may also wish to pause the print right after the player platforms are printed and swap colors. This will allow for greater ease in visually identifying the player platforms on opposite corners.

How To Play:

The aim of the game is to be the first player to move all pieces across the board from their starting platform to the opposing players platform. This platform is slightly raised above the others. Should one or more of the squares in the target area contain a piece belonging to another player, this does not prevent a player from winning. In this case, the game is won when all available points within the area are occupied.

Toss a coin to decide who starts. Players will take turns to move a single piece of their own color. The piece may either be simply moved into an adjacent square OR it may make one or more hops over other pieces. Where a hopping move is lade, each player must be over an adjacent piece and into the vacant square directly beyond it. A hop may be over any colored piece including the players own, and can proceed in any of the eight directions. After each hop a player may either finish, or if possible and desired, continue by hopping over another iece. It does occasionally happen that a player is able to move a piece all the way from their starting platform into the opposing players platform in a single turn.

Pieces are never removed from the board. It is permitted to move a piece into any square in the board including squares in areas belonging to other players. Once a piece has reached the opposite area it may not be moved out of the area, but it may be moved within the area.

If a player is prevented from winning because of the presence of an opposing peg in the destination area, the player is entitled to swap the opposing peg with that of his own peg. This applies for both a single hole move and any part of a hopping move.

Version History and Future changes

V1.0 - Contains the basic board and 20 pieces, 10 color A and 10 color B.

V1.3 - Resolved minor tolerance issues between the game piece peg and the receiving hole in the board.

Upcoming - V2.0 - Reserved for the addition of magnets on the pawns instead of pegs, and the associated magnets on the board instead of holes.
