Description

Don't you hate when the anticipation of gift giving is gone in fleeting moment as the recipient tears open the box, package, or envelope? Make that feeling last longer! Possibly even hours longer! 

Up to 13 layers with up to 350 screws with up to 10 different screws (5 different heads in both left and right hand threads). Guaranteed to bring feelings to all those involved! (You will likely gain happiness while the recipient may gain anger, ire, agitation, annoyance, vengeance, etc).

Warning - Assembling it is tedious. While the recipient will surely be occupied for an extended period of time, you are also committing yourself to several hours of assembly. 

Details

Designed to be modular and printable by most printers with bridging and overhangs kept to a minimum. Elephants foot should only be a major concern on the screws and tools. 

You can use all 13 nested boxes, or any number less than that depending on the size of the object being encased, or how much you want to torture the gift recipient. 

All left handed parts have a circle on inward facing face to differentiate them from the right handed counterparts. 

For the innermost box used, you will want to fill approx. half of the holes with Fill Plug Inserts, and the other half with Full Thread Inserts. In the next box, the holes which line up with the Full Thread Inserts will need Half Thread Inserts, while the remainder will get Full Thread Inserts. The outer box is then slid over the inner box (with the bottom of the outer box meeting the open side of the inner box). Screws are then screwed into all the Half Thread Inserts until the heads are at least flush. Continue for each additional box. 

In the final, outermost box, approx. half of the holes will need Fill Plug Inserts, or they can be left open if you prefer. 

It sounds confusing, but it's much simpler than it sounds. It's just an awkward task to explain in text. See below diagram for a cross section of a single screw and associated inserts. 

Note: If you look closely, in the photos the hex design screw has a central post - this design ended up being more trouble than it was worth and I replaced it with the hex screw found in the files section. 

Tips: 

If using left and right handed screws, be mindful of making sure each left hand insert is paired with another left hand insert in the next box. Otherwise you'll be disassembling to fix your mistake. I did this multiple times. I found it easiest to use a pencil to mark on the threads of the left handed inserts so there was a visual indicator from the outside, but that would not be shown when assembly was complete. And yet I still mixed them up a few times (once on the outer-most box, which resulted in having to remove 50 screws just to swap out one insert). 

Try your best to ballpark how many of each part you'll need, and then print at least 15% more of them. I designed it, and I'm fairly decent at math, and I still ended up short on inserts and screws. If you're not very good at math, maybe print 50% additional!

 

Printing: 

Print with your standard profile, as oriented in the files. I increased my number of perimeters for the tools to reduce the chance of them breaking, but they will likely be fine regardless. 

The tools should scale fine if you find that they are too tight. I do not know if anything else can be scaled successfully. I wouldn't suggest it. 

Once printed, the fit between the larger boxes may seem a bit tight, but once assembled the weight of the boxes will aid in taking them apart (ie: once there’s no screws holding the outer layer, while holding it upside down, a bit of downward shaking will cause the inner ones to slide out).
 

Size of each box and number of holes in each

Box 1 - 5 holes per side, 25 holes total; Fits a cylinder approx 51mm wide or a square approx 39mm wide, and 51mm tall. 

Box 2 - 5 holes per side, 25 holes total; Fits a cylinder approx 61mm wide or a square approx 47mm wide, and 53mm tall.

Box 3 - 5 holes per side, 25 holes total; Fits a cylinder approx 71mm wide or a square approx 55mm wide, and 55mm tall.

Box 4 - 7 holes per side, 35 holes total; Fits a cylinder approx 81.5mm wide or a square approx 63mm wide, and 57mm tall. 

Box 5 - 7 holes per side, 35 holes total; Fits a cylinder approx 92mm wide or a square approx 71mm wide, and 59.5mm tall. 

Box 6 - 11 holes per side, 55 holes total; Fits a cylinder approx 102.5mm wide or a square approx 79mm wide, and 61.5mm tall. 

Box 7 - 11 holes per side, 55 holes total; Fits a cylinder approx 112.5mm wide or a square approx 86.5mm wide, and 63.5mm tall. 

Box 8 - 11 holes per side, 55 holes total; Fits a cylinder approx 123mm wide or a square approx 94.5mm wide, and 66mm tall. 

Box 9 - 13 holes per side, 65 holes total; Fits a cylinder approx 133mm wide or a square approx 102.5mm wide, and 68mm tall. 

Box 10 - 13 holes per side, 65 holes total; Fits a cylinder approx 143.5mm wide or a square approx 110.5mm wide, and 70mm tall. 

Box 11 - 13 holes per side, 65 holes total; Fits a cylinder approx 154mm wide or a square approx 118.5mm wide, and 72.5mm tall. 

Box 12 - 22 holes per side, 110 holes total; Fits a cylinder approx 164mm wide or a square approx 126.5mm wide, and 74.5mm tall. 

Box 13 - 22 holes per side, 110 holes total; Fits a cylinder approx 174.5mm wide or a square approx 134.5mm wide, and 76.5mm tall.
