Description

Foldable chess board with snap on tiles. The tile is 25x25 mm so the board half fits on Mk3s.  The cavity in the tile is prepared for 1mm x 5mm magnet but it's optional.

For the hinge I've used piece of 1,75mm PETG filament. Firstly clean the hole with 2mm drill bit, then push the filament in through the hinge and cut it flush with the box. Then use small screwdriver or nail to push it a little more. The hole for the filament is through whole box so the lenght of the filament is not a problem.

Box parts have place for 8x3 magnets in the corners so the parts are secured together when joined. I've made holes for same magnets also in the middle, to better secure it in opened position, but I've don't have enough of them to test this feature correctly. They are 15 mm deep.

In a photos I've used https://www.printables.com/model/32741-chess-set figures scaled down to 68%. The tile is 25mm, the biggest base of the figure is 17 so it fits OK.

If you need smaller version, write it in the comments, The model is parametrized so I can play with some dimensions (eg. tile size, box height)

Tips:

  • I've printed tiles in 8pc batches because some of them warped and I've printed 8 more of each color,
  • They are printed in 0.2 layer height, the box is printed in 0.3 layer height.
  • Check the polarity of magnets before pressing them in (don't ask how I know)
  • All is printed in PLA with regular settings, without supoort or any postprocessing (except the drilling mentioned above, which might be optional, because the hole for the filament is 2mm)

EDIT

I've added 12.4x12.4cm version of the board for travelling.
