LEGO Ornithopter Stand

Hello fellow makers,

I assembled the Lego model of the dune ornithopter as soon as it arrived, and realized quickly that it is too big to stand on top of my IKEA Kallax shelf with the landing gear down. Although a beautiful pose, I wanted the model to be visible from the sofa (low seating position) while the model was positioned rather high.

After designing my parts, I realized another creator (@MroznyHipis) already did a display stand, even with a magnetically detachable mount. If you are looking for a display stand, please also check it out here!

As I wanted a tilted stand and just the Atreides coat of arms on the base, I printed mine and am quite happy with it.

The display stand is made for the center of gravity when the wings are folded outward. When the wings are tugged in, the center of gravity shifts. It still holds, but is not as stable. I can't guarantee the long term stability with the wings tugged in. 

With the tolerances of my printer the interface to the model doesn‘t snap in like normal bricks but only keeps the Model from sliding. This is deliberate to let you remove the model easily for playtime without the base sticking to it.

All pieces print without support. I printed mine in Prusament Recyled PETG (with the coat of arms in PLA). The arm gets inserted into the base, which I glued down with epoxy. The two halves of the interface to the ornithopter get glued together, after checking if the dimensions were accurate and the part fits on the ornithopter. After letting the glue dry, the interface can be fitted on the arm (I needed to shave a bit off to make it fit snugly) and the stand can be tested. I added rubber bumpers on the bottom of the base to make it resistant to sliding.

The arm and interface were done with 25% gyroid infill and the base with 15% infill. So far it is sturdy, although a little wobbly from side to side shortly after placing the model on the stand.

The whole print can be printed with a Prusa Mini or bigger.
