Description
This is an insert / organizer for The Quest for El Dorado (Lautapelit Edition), with Heroes & Hexes; Dangers & Muisca; Dragons, Treasures, & Mysteries; and Promo Packs 1-3 (but not Golden Temples). I'm told that it also works with the Australian Meeple edition. It all fits in the base box, has no lid lift when storing rulebooks in your preferred language, supports premium sleeves (Gamegenic Prime shown in the photos), supports vertical storage, and was designed to aid setup and teardown.
Here are some features of the insert and its trays.
Individual player trays to hold each player’s starting cards and meeples.
A setup tray to hold:
Ten 16 mm dice. Instead of placing four cave tiles directly on each cave on the board, I place a die on each cave space and set the die to a value of four. When a player obtains a cave tile, they tick the die down by one and randomly grab the cave tile from the gray cave tile bag shown in the pictures. After a die has been ticked down four times, it is removed and no additional cave tiles may be claimed from that cave.
Cave tiles from the Heroes & Hexes and Dangers & Muisca expansions. I do not always play with these expansions, so I created spaces where their cave tiles can be kept separately in the tray. These can be mixed into the gray cave tile bag when playing with these expansions.
Gems in their own removable holder. If playing with the gems from the Dragons, Treasures, & Mysteries expansion, you can remove the circular wheel from this tray and place it on the table.
Treasures and related tiles
Mist overlay tiles
Borders
Dragons
First player hat token
A second setup tray primarily to hold map overlay tiles. The hero camp and El Dorado tiles are under the larger alligator/dangerous location tiles.
A main map tiles tray. This is designed to stay in the bottom of the box. You can grab the starting tile, the main map tiles, and the smaller map tiles all without removing the tray from the box.
A cards tray that has separate spaces for:
Starting market cards
Other base game market cards
Hex cards
Muisca cards
Familiars/Pets
Heroes & Hexes expansion market cards
Dragons, Treasures, & Mysteries expansion market cards
Each of Promo Packs 1-3
A bag tray to hold two microfiber bags I purchased from the BGG store. The gray one holds the cave tiles while the purple one holds the hex tokens from Heroes & Hexes.
As noted above, this insert is for the Lautapelit edition of the game. The Ravensburger version has cards and tiles that are larger than the Lautapelit version, so I'm told that they will not fit in this version of the insert.
The images show how to layer everything in the box, as well as providing closer images of some of the trays. As mentioned above, there is no lid lift if you store a single language version of the rulebooks for the base game and each of the three expansions. If you store rulebooks for additional languages, there will be some lid lift.
To achieve the insert as shown, print the quantities shown in the file names (e.g., print 4 of the player trays that have “x4” in the name) and one of everything that doesn’t list a quantity.
Everything prints without supports and fits on a Prusa MK3S+ or MK4 print bed (250 x 210 mm). I printed the trays in the photos with PLA, 15% infill, with a 0.2 mm layer height.
I have included the original OpenSCAD files in case anyone wants to improve on the design for non-commercial purposes.
