Plastic Sushi Playset

My daughter asked for a sushi play set for Christmas. I told her I would make it for her, rather than buying it. The only requirements were that it had to have chopsticks, salmon, and california rolls (here, as sake nigirizushi and a maki roll with interchangable pieces) and there had to be at least five of each piece.

The bottom of the "maki" has a hole in it so that the pieces can be forced out of the top if necessary.

Don't tell my daughter, but she's getting a lot more than she asked for. In addition to the maki rolls, I've made some "inside out" maki rolls, chop stick rests, soy sauce dishes (with soy sauce in them), ginger, wasabi, chopsticks in custom paper wrappers, and a wide assortment of fillings. For variety, I've made the OpenSCAD functions that create the ginger and wasabi random - so every time you generate the STL, you'll get a different little globby of ginger or wasabi. They both turned out really well.

I included this Utah Teapot in the set (http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2022), but it broke off about 80% of the way through the print - so I designed a new lid to fit the wider-than-normal top.

While this is made in OpenSCAD, it's only very marginally parametric. I've added a lot of comments, so the code should be easy to tinker with.

Lastly, I used various colors of plastic to make the sushi filling - and in different segments (the parts are one-half, one-third, one-fourth, and one-fifth) so that later on we could use the interiors to explore fractions.

Rather than uploading all the STL's one by one, I've zipped them into a single file and included the OpenSCAD file for you to use.

How to Make Maki Sushi

1. Print the black (sushi-maki-black.stl) and white (sushi-maki-white.stl) with dualstrusion.
2. Print the "filling" (sushi-5fill.stl) in as many colors as you like. I'd suggest five colors.
3. Sand to suit.

9. Print the sushi rice (sushi-nigiri-rice.stl) and fish (sushi-nigiri-sake.stl).

10. The top of the rice is curved and so is the interior of the fish, so they should fit together well.
11. Sand to suit.

13. Print the black (sushi-bowl-black.stl) and white (sushi-bowl-white.stl) with dualstrusion.

14. Sand to suit.

16. Print the chopsticks in desired color.

17. Print the PDF for the chopstick wrappers.
18. Cut out the wrappers and fold each one in half.

19. Place chopsticks in the folded wrapper and use a gluestick to seal it in place.

20. Uncomment the line for the ginger module in the OpenSCAD file.

21. F5 to render a random ginger arrangement, F6 to compile.

22. Export the object as an STL and print in desired color.
