Skull Double Deck Box

It's a box for cards (but not sleeved ones!), and it has skulls on it! But what actually inspired this design was wondering if I could make a hinged-lidded box with lots of detail on the lid, which of course meant that the lid couldn't be slapped outside-down on the print bed as is the usual approach.

That's the reason the lid prints pointing upwards. If those curved features were printed horizontally they'd be at the mercy of contour lines, but by being oriented vertically they can be rendered far more cleanly. Note that the lid can still rotate all the way back to 180 degrees if you so desire - it isn't constrained to only the position in which it prints.

There is space for up to eight magnets to hold the lid closed - two sets of two on each side. Those are purely optional, however.

Interior card space dimensions: (2 spaces with) 65mm x 90mm, 30mm tall.

Print Description

This is an articulated model so watch out for print issues such as overextrusion and stringing that might bind moving parts together!

You might want to use fine layer lines, or at least adaptive line height, to get the most out of the skulls, which print vertically.

Optional Magnets

There is room in the model for up to eight of our old favourites, 6x3mm cylindrical magnets, in four pairs.

Print Dimensions

The Skull Double Deck Box occupies 156mm x 145mm on the print bed and is 117mm tall.

Supports Needed?

Not at all!  Designed for straightforward printing!

Scalability

The biggest issue with scaling this one is that the magnets will no longer fit!

Print Orientation

The box prints open, with the lid pointing up at an angle so that the back face of the lid rests on the print bed.

Further Thoughts

I spend so much time orienting designs for functional reasons, particularly strength and overall printability, so it was an interesting departure to solve an orientation problem just to make something print as neatly and cleanly as possible! That said, I proceeded to use standard line height instead of using nice fine layers, so my own prints could still have been better than they were! But even an unoptimised print oriented vertically is still going to look pretty great :)
