Description

This storage system has been designed to hold my Mansions of Madness monster bases. You can download the bases here https://www.printables.com/model/857943-monster-bases-with-id-slot-for-mansions-of-madness . The bases with the monsters, slide into the rail system and are prevented from sliding out by removeable end stops.

The storage rails will fit in the Mansions of Madness Second Edition box (which measures internally 287mm x 287mm) with a 2mm clearance each way.  They will also fit in the box with my Monster Draws ( https://www.printables.com/model/857979-monster-drawers-for-mansions-of-madness-board-game ), provided the Draws cabinet is placed on it's side and not under a base rail.

I have arranged the other contents of my MOM base game to give a flat area, no higher than the thickness of 18 room tiles plus the two instruction books. That is, all the large tiles in the base game plus 10 of the small tiles on the top and the two instruction books.  The remaining small tiles placed to the side.  It's best to keep the instruction books at the opposite side to the Star Spawn too, as this ensures the top of the StarSpawn will be stored below the top of the box. 

The Star Spawn models only just fit on the large bases, so there isn't enough clearance for these models to completely slide into the rail system, due to the front feet of the Star Spawn being too close to the edge of the base.  The the SSpawn rails therefore have a cut-out to allow the bases to drop in, then slide backwards into the rail, so the rear half of the base is held down by the rail. An Endstop placed at right angles to the base rail in front of the Star Spawn base will stop the base sliding forwards. 

The smaller monsters should be slid in so they face the Star Spawn, to make sure there is enough clearance to slide them out without colliding with monsters in the adjacent rails. Deep ones can go in either way.

The minis from the base game fit in as shown below.

I printed mine in PLA with 0.2mm layer hight quality setting and adaptive variable layer height enabled to keep dimensions accurate. The top rails are best printed on their side as this keeps support material to a minimum. The long rails have to be printed diagonally on the build plate in order to fit on a Prusa mk3. Printing the long rails, I had a few failures on the first layer, as they were near the edge of the plate and the end lost adhesion. I changed the orientation to the opposite corners (bottom left to top right) and had better results.

To assemble the holder, the top rails square pins simply press into the base rails. To hold all the minis from the base game, you will need to print:

  • L_BaseRail   - 2off
  • L_BaseRailType2 - 2off
  • L_LargeMonsterRail - 1off
  • L_LargeMonsterRail(M) - 1off
  • M_MonsterRail - 5off
  • L_Invest-MonsterRail - 1off
  • L_InvestigatorRail - 1off
  • S_SSpawnRail -1 off
  • S_SSpawnRail(M) - 1off
  • EndStop - 20 off

The rails are positioned as shown below.

I have also included extra spare rails, so that you could redesign the base rails for a different layout or to hold minis from the expansions. These are in the Other_Rails_step_and_stl_files folder. The base rails are 285mm x 8mm x 4mm, and the square holes are 3.15mm. I allowed a clearance of 0.3m (0.15mm each side) for the the bases to slide in. 

I did find some of the bases were initially a bit tight, this was caused by the bottom layer of the monster base spreading when I printed mine, If yours are the same then they may need trimming / filing to make sure they slide in easily. Slide in and out the monsters by moving the base the first few times, otherwise you could separate the monster from the base if they are tight.
